A Brief History
The 1st Collaroy Plateau Scout Group was formed on the 18th November 1963 when a committee was formed with Mr Barry Garland as President. That Group has now been running continuously as 1st Collaroy Plateau Scout Group since 1964.
We have had many homes in that time spending time in a hall on the plateau and with 1st Narrabeen at Kent Street.
Our current hall was re-built in 1980’s as a joint venture between 1st Collaroy Plateau, who had surplus funds but no hall and 2nd Narrabeen which needed funding for repairs and renovations to their hall by Narrabeen Lake. Most of the work was carried out by parents and Group members with fundraising initiatives.
The new hall was officially opened by “Aunty May” in December 1991 and renamed “The Skip Kitchener Hall”.
Sadly 2nd Narrabeen became de-registered in the early 2000’s due to a low membership and the remaining leaders joined Elanora Heights Group.
A memory of the relationship with 2nd Narrabeen is still retained, as our Rover Group (18-26 years) is known today as Platabeen Rovers.
The first cub meeting was held in the progress hall on the 15th April 1964 with Wilma Doust as“Akela” and Gwen Doherty as“Baloo” and Cub Instructor Nici Vanden Broek as“Chil”. There were twelve cubs at the start and by the end of the year twenty four cubs in total.
As the numbers of cubs increased during the 1960’s there were two Cub Packs – “Possum Pack” and “Wombat Pack”. The Wombat Pack closed during the late 1980’s and the name “Possum Pack” has been kept by the current Pack.
The first Scout Troop meeting was on the 6th May 1964 with Scout Master Reid (Long John) and Warren Orth (Speed). Twelve scouts were invested on the 26th June 1964
Senior Scouts now known as Venturers
Senior Scouts now known as Venturers began in 1965 with the first leader being Trevor Phillips. Bob Richards who is still the current Venturer Leader started in 1972.
The Rover Crew – Platabeen
The Rover Crew started in 1977 with Robert an Elizabeth Walker as Crew Advisors. The Rovers came from three scout groups, 1st Collaroy Plateau, 2nd Narrabeen and 1st Cromer. They named the Rover Crew Platabeen a combination of the groups.
A Joey Mob was started in 1994 and due to a lack of leaders was closed in 1996.
1st Collaroy Plateau scarf is maroon with a gold edging- the maroon was the district’s colour during the 1960’s and the gold was to represent the sand of both, Narrabeen and Collaroy Beaches and Narrabeen Lake.
Both Collaroy Plateau and Wheeler Heights School have gold in their school colours.
Since 1964 the 1st Collaroy Plateau group has been a part of the following districts:
- Originally in the Manly Warringah District
- Then the Pittwater District
- Then Manly Warringah
- Currently it is in the Northern Beaches District
